The New Year Seminar 2009/2010 took place from the 28th of December to the 2nd of January in Vilnius, Lithuania, dealing with “Manipulation in History”.
Here’s a report about the seminar by Lisa:
„Vilnius“?
Wait, I think I have heard of it. The capital of Lithuania, isn’t it? This small country in the Baltic States? …What can you do there after all?
Quite a bit! When about 40 international history students get together to discuss controversial topics of historical science, explore the the beautiful city by day and night and, above all, have a great time with each other, you can have a week full of surprises!
The topic, „Manipulation in History“, was divided into the workshops political propaganda, religious propaganda, stereotypes, manipulation of history-writing and indoctrination. But the workshops, of course, did not fill all the five days we spent in Lithuania. To give you an idea of the activities throughout the seminar, here is a short abstract:
DAY 1 – Arriving in Vilnius and getting to know students from Lithuania, Croatia, Slovenia, Finland, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Switzerland and Marburg, Bremen and Heidelberg at the Ice-Breaking Party. Spending the first night in our dormitory – and well, having another five days to get used to it!
DAY 2 – Tour through the gorgeous old parts of Vilniaus Universitetas which was founded in the 16th Century. First day of workshops. Later that evening, visiting the world famous Vilnius Roller Club – yes, party on roller skates!
DAY 3 – Second day of workshops. Is that it already!? Having learned so many interesting aspects about Slovenian, Bulgarian and Swiss history I still feel I could go on discussing the topic – my workshop was „Manipulation in history-writing“. But we still have to prepare for our presentation at the „Final Conclusions“.
DAY 4 – Road trip to idyllic and snowy Trakai, visiting the medieval castle which was built on an island and then was surrounded by a completely frozen lake. Inside, we had the opportunity to examine an exhibition of ancient Lithuanian items from coins over clothing to porcelain pipes. Back in Vilnius, having our Final Conclusions, presenting our workshop results and getting to know those of the others.
In the evening, New Year’s celebration including National Drinks Party! On top of that, everyone wore a (more or less improvised) costume. An alcohol-heavy and great evening.
DAY 5 – Getting up late, having leftovers from the party for breakfast and spending some free time walking around in the beautiful old town. Watching some filmed scenes of the last days and already getting nostalgic for everyone will depart the next day. Then, depending on departure time, spending the last Lithuanian money in a pub respectively going to bed early.
Now it’s over already. Vilnius, we’ll miss you!
At home again, we felt exhausted but content – having the amazing feeling of having learned and experienced so much, broadened one’s horizon and got to know so many great people in less than a week… I’m already looking forward to all those ISHA seminars to come!
